October’s Birthstones: Tourmaline & Opal — Colour, Magic and Meaning

If your birthday falls in October, you’re in for a treat — you don’t just get one birthstone, you get two! Tourmaline and opal are both bursting with colour, light, and personality — perfect for those who love to stand out and shine in their own beautiful way.

I absolutely adore both of these gemstones for their charm, individuality, and storytelling power. Each one has a unique way of capturing emotion and energy — the perfect reflection of what bespoke jewellery is all about.

Tourmaline – The Storyteller Gem

Tourmaline is the gemstone of creativity and individuality. It comes in an astonishing variety of colours — from delicate pastel pinks and vibrant greens to deep blues and even multicolour “watermelon” stones that blend pink and green together like summer fruit.

Meaning & Symbolism

Tourmaline is said to inspire artistic expression, balance emotions, and attract positive energy. I think of it as the stone for dreamers and doers — those who embrace the full spectrum of life.

Each colour tells a different story:

  • Pink tourmaline – love, compassion, emotional healing.

  • Green tourmaline – growth, vitality, confidence.

  • Indicolite (blue tourmaline) – calm, clarity, peace.

  • Watermelon tourmaline – joy, playfulness, harmony.

Why I Love It

No two tourmalines are ever the same — each has its own little world of colour inside. That’s why I love working with them in bespoke designs. Whether it’s a soft pastel or a bold hue, tourmaline brings a fresh, modern twist to fine jewellery.

My favourite pairings? Pink tourmaline set in warm rose gold for a romantic glow — or vibrant green in yellow gold for something earthy and confident.

Opal – The Gem of Dreams

Opal is pure magic. Unlike any other gemstone, it doesn’t just shine — it shifts and dances in the light, flashing with colour as it moves. Each one feels alive, like it’s keeping a secret.

Meaning & Symbolism

Opal has long been known as the “stone of inspiration.” It’s said to symbolise imagination, transformation, and emotional connection — which makes it a favourite of mine for those who lead with heart and creativity.

Each opal is completely unique, with its own pattern of fiery flashes known as play-of-colour. No two ever look alike, which feels like such a lovely metaphor for individuality.

Why I Love It

Opals are full of personality — and a little bit of attitude. They remind me that beauty doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be real.

I love pairing opals with delicate accent stones, like diamonds or sapphires, to highlight their ever-changing hues. They’re stunning as statement rings or pendants, especially in yellow or rose gold, which enhances their warmth beautifully.

October’s Perfect Pair

Having both tourmaline and opal as October birthstones feels like such a gift — two gems full of light, energy, and emotion.

Where tourmaline celebrates diversity, creativity, and expression, opal embodies emotion, imagination, and magic. Together, they remind me that beauty comes in many colours — and that every love story, like every gemstone, is one of a kind.

Ready to Create Something Magical?

If you’re celebrating an October birthday (or you simply love these colourful stones as much as I do), I’d love to design something just for you.

Every bespoke jewel I create starts with a story — and October’s gemstones are full of them.
